  • Prayer Reflections: Joshua 1 and Judges 1 – Settlement and Sin
God chose Joshua to lead Israel into the land of Canaan. It was a dangerous and challenging mission that required faithfulness to God at every turn. Joshua led the nation against the inhabitants of Canaan. The Lord commanded Israel to purge the land of all idolatrous inhabitants. Sadly the settlement was not as thorough as God commanded and various pockets of idolatry remained. The book of Judges reveals a people who were lacking trust in God and being oppressed by their enemies. There was no leadership in Israel and the people were left to their own devices as they refused to obey God. The cycle of unbelief, disobedience, oppression and deliverance is recorded in Judges to highlight the importance of trusting in the Lord and the lack of leadership present in Israel. God would hear the pleas of His people and show mercy but they would fall back into their sinful ways and suffer. They needed a leader who could truly deliver them and empower them to live holy lives. This would be centuries in the making.
